Tara Mata

Tara Mata is one of the major goddesses of Hinduism and is considered one of the ten Mahavidyas. Tara Mata is worshipped as the goddess of wisdom,compassion,and power. Her name "Tara" means "the one who crosses the ocean" or "the one who delivers from troubles." Tara Mata leads her devotees out of the darkness of suffering,distress and ignorance and leads them to knowledge and liberation. Tara Mata also enjoys high respect in Tibetan Buddhism,where sheis worshipped as Tara Devi .

Forms of Tara Mata :

Tara Mata is depicted as a blue-coloured goddess. Her form is considered to be as wide and deep as the sky or the ocean. She isshown holding,,which represent both life and death.

Symbols and Attributes of Tara Mata :
  • Blue Colour : The blue colour of Tara Mata symbolises sky and infinity , representing wisdom and limitless possibilities.

  • Lotus : Lotus is the symbol of purity , truth and salvation , which shows that Tara Mata is the goddess of knowledge.

  • Sword and Skull : The sword symbolises cutting off ignorance and obstacles , while the skull represents the cycle of life and death , from which Tara Mata provides liberation.


Worship and importance of Tara Mata :

Tara Mata is worshipped especially by sadhaks,tantriks and devotees whoseek refuge in Tara to attain, knowledge and spiritual advancement. Tara Mata is the goddess who liberates one fromfear,,enemies and obstacles and helps in attaining spiritual knowledge.

Story of Tara Mata :

According to a major legend , when the gods and demons churned the ocean , poison came out and started destroying all living beings. To destroy this poison, Lord Shiva put it in his throat , due to which his throat turned blue. When Shiva started feeling extreme burning sensation in his throat , Tara Mata appeared and took Shiva in her lap and freed him from the poison. After this incident, Tara Mata is also called "Neel Saraswati".

Tara Mata in Buddhism :

In Buddhism, Tara Devi is considered the goddess of compassion , and she has two main forms: Shwet Tara ( White Tara) who is the goddess of compassion and longevity , and Nila Tara ( Green Tara) who is considered the goddess of protector and liberator from trouble. Tara is also considered a bodhisattva , who works for the liberation of all beings.

Mantra of Tara Mata :

The following mantra is chanted in praise and meditation of Tara Mata :

  • " Om Hrim Strim Hrum Phat" This mantra is chanted to invoke power , compassion and liberation.

Tara Mata shelters her devotees and gives them protection and strength. Her worship is considered extremely important in Tantra and Sadhana,is worshipped asSankatmochan.
